The Nectar One Integrated Carbon and HEPA Filter

At Nectar we’re developing an industrial desktop 3D printer made from the ground up for manufacturing and the manufacturing industry. To do this we’ve developed our own slicing and print management software alongside our 3D printer. We’ve also developed a modular architecture.

Our modularity means that components can be swapped out for others quickly. This reduces the TCO for our customers, makes our printers easier to maintain, lets service staff replace components quickly and will let us ship hardware modules as upgrades in the future.

One of our core modules is an industry first, an integrated HEPA and Carbon filter module. In order to make sure that the Nectar One could print safely in offices or in areas were people are around we wanted to add a carbon and HEPA filter to the printer.

When 3D printing particulate matter can be released. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and other fine particles are released into the air. 3D printing materials also contain plasticizers and colorants that may be harmful when inhaled. Simultaneously some materials release hydrogen cyanide and other harmful gasses and vapors when they are melted. Additionally filled materials may release particles that are harmful (fine metal particles or fibers). Because we want our 3D printer to be safe under all operating conditions we wanted to eliminate these potential risks by developing a filtering system.

There was nothing on the market that had the right form factor to be installed in a 3D printer. There was also no solution available that would combine the benefits of a carbon filter and a HEPA filter in one small package. The Nectar One filter is the first custom developed HEPA and Carbon filter made specifically for the 3D printing application.

The carbon filter removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors while the HEPA filter (high-efficiency particulate air) removes at least 99.97% of particles that have a size of 0.3 micron. By combining these two classes of filter in one we’ve constructed a safer 3D printer for you to use. Our initial tests show that the printer outputs cleaner air than the air that enters the 3D printer. Whats more, the compact filter is easier to replace when it needs to be swapped out. We’re very proud of our combined HEPA and Carbon filter developed specifically for 3D printing.  We’ve even gotten interest from other 3D printer manufacturers on our filter system and are considering making them available because this would make any and all 3D printers safer.
